Diego Carlos delay explained, Villa no longer hold interest in Tarkowski

Aston Villa no longer have an interest in Burnley defender James Tarkowski as we await official confirmation of the signing of Diego Carlos from Sevilla.

Villa released a club statement last week confirming that a deal had been agreed with the La Liga side for the Brazilian defender, pending a medical and formalities being carried out.

Days on, we’ve yet to hear that the deal has been completed, and the reasoning for that delay has now been reported.

As per the Express and Star, it’s noted that the announcement will come once the 29-year-old has received a work permit, and so it’s hoped that isn’t too far away as we look to wrap up another crucial summer signing to further strengthen Steven Gerrard’s squad.

Meanwhile, the report also adds that Villa no longer hold an interest in Tarkowski, as the signing of Carlos presumably means we no longer need to search for another centre-half, while it’s added that Villa were never considering Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly despite speculation suggesting otherwise.

With Carlos, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Calum Chambers and Kortney Hause currently at Steven Gerrard’s disposal, that would seemingly be enough in that department to have enough competition and cover, but time will tell if there are any departures which could in turn then require additional signings to fill those voids.

For now though, it would appear as though Carlos will hopefully be confirmed as a Villa player and unveiled as such in the coming days, and any further reinforcements signed in this transfer window will address other needs in the current squad.

Villa have wasted little time in making signings though, with a permanent swoop for Philippe Coutinho setting things off earlier this month before the key signing of Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer just a week ago,
