Important boost as Villa ace provides positive injury update

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno took to social media on Tuesday night to deliver a crucial boost as he provided an injury update.

The 30-year-old has yet to feature this season having initially suffered a hamstring injury which required surgery at the end of the last campaign.

After sustaining a setback last month, his comeback was pushed back as awaited further news on when he could return to the matchday squad, and it appears as though it might not be far off.

As per his Instagram story seen in the tweet below, the Spaniard thanked Villa fans for their messages of support during his recovery, and he added that he is feeling much better and “will be back soon”.

It’s still unclear at this stage when we can expect him to be involved again, as Unai Emery and his staff will no doubt monitor him closely and look to avoid another late setback which could keep him sidelined.

Nevertheless, the update is positive, and Moreno’s return will be a major boost given the quality he adds to the side and how well he fits the style and system under Emery.

In fairness though, Lucas Digne has done an excellent job in his absence, and so Moreno will face a battle to regain his place in the Villa starting XI.

The Frenchman has played a key role with his attacking play, and although question marks are perhaps sometimes still raised over his defensive work, he has certainly given Emery something to think about.

Either way though, given the volume of games we’re playing this season, it’s important to have competition and depth in every position, and with the workload that Digne has had so far this year, the return of Moreno will be vital to keep everyone fit and healthy over the course of the campaign.

Villa face AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night before hosting Luton Town in the Premier League on Sunday, and so it remains to be seen if Moreno is back on the bench for either, or if we have to wait just a little longer for his return.
