Villa trio make PL team of the week after key roles in brilliant win

Aston Villa are strongly represented in the Premier League team of the week in Week 9, following our superb 4-1 win over West Ham Utd on Sunday.

Given our brilliant start to the league campaign, it has become a more common theme that we have a contingent named in the team of the week, and this one is no different.

From a Villa fan perspective, it’s always difficult to single out players for praise given how many of our key individuals produced a top performance on Sunday, but evidently some gained more attention than others.

As seen in the Premier League’s tweet below, Ezri Konsa, Douglas Luiz and Ollie Watkins make the XI on this occasion, having all played a decisive role in our win over the Hammers.

Watkins was on the mark as he produced a top finish to score a crucial goal at a crucial time to make it 3-1 just as we were coming under pressure, while he was a threat and menace for the West Ham defence for most of the encounter with his movement and work ethic.

As for Luiz, he got on the scoresheet for a sixth consecutive home league game having bagged a brace, but aside from his goals, he was as influential as ever in the heart of our midfield as he helped dictate and control proceedings.

In addition to his defensive duties as he was excellent yet again, Konsa also won the penalty for our second, and so it really is hard to argue against any of the Villa trio being included as they all put in a top shift.

Honourable mentions must also go to Matty Cash, John McGinn and Moussa Diaby, who were important in our victory too, but it’s hoped that we’re back here discussing more Villa players next weekend when we host Luton Town.

Our win this past Sunday moved us back into fifth place in the Premier League standings, a point adrift of fourth spot, and as we continue to impress at Villa Park, we’ll be aiming for a 12th consecutive home league win after attempting to secure a vital result away at AZ Alkmaar in midweek in the Europa Conference League.
