Aston Villa are reportedly set to bring in Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany, although he will remain with the Spanish giants until the summer.
Speculation has been rife for months now over the possibility of Villa making a change to our hierarchy in terms of bringing in a sporting director that will work closely with Unai Emery moving forward.

The club have dismissed reports in the past, and so time will tell if they do the same with the latest suggestions, but according to Fabrizio Romano, Villa have made a formal proposal to Alemany and it’s considered one of his most ‘concrete options’.
Further, AS report that Alemany will join us as his next project having confirmed his exit from Barcelona this summer, albeit he will see out the transfer window with the La Liga giants, and so it remains unclear for now when he would formally begin a new position with us.
It’s also claimed that Villa’s economic offer was ‘irresistible’, and naturally, there would be a lot of scope and backing for him on a sporting level to help turn us into real contenders moving forward.
Given the dismissal of previous rumours, it remains to be seen if this is officially announced by Villa in the coming days or weeks, and at that point, we can begin to look forward to how a new partnership will work.
Alemany has established a reputation for being a positive influence in Barcelona’s previous transfer work and deal-making, and bringing in someone that Emery perhaps has had a say in who he wants and feels would be a perfect fit with him will hopefully mean a more streamlined and successful Villa transfer strategy in the years ahead.
Again, it’s still unclear at this stage what a potential appointment of Alemany would mean for Johan Lange, but this is an exciting development for now that could have a major impact on our ability to build and strengthen a squad capable of competing at the top level moving forward.
