Interest in Villa ace dismissed as new deal touted

Reported interest from Bayern Munich in Ollie Watkins has been dismissed amid suggestions that he’s set to be offered a new contract by Aston Villa.

The 27-year-old has been crucial for us again this season, particularly since Unai Emery’s arrival, as he has bagged 15 goals and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.

Having been made the focal point of our attack under the Spanish tactician, Watkins has a big role to play for us moving forward, but speculation has suggested he has attracted interest from elsewhere.

According to Fabrizio Romano though, talk of Bayern being keen on him are not accurate, with the Bundesliga giants said to have other targets in mind and there are no negotiations taking place for Watkins.

Further, he adds that Villa are expected to put a new contract offer on the table for the striker, which will see him get an improved salary and extend his stay at the club beyond his current deal which runs until 2025.

While Emery will undoubtedly want to add reinforcements this summer to strengthen his squad and add competition and depth, there are key individuals in the current group that will be integral in his long-term plans.

Watkins has established himself as one of them with his form and impact under his stewardship, and so a new contract would not only be a deserved reward but also a further indication of the faith in his ability moving forward.

It remains to be seen if progress is made in talks between him and the club before the season ends, with the full focus of all concerned currently on the final four games of the Premier League campaign with hope of European qualification still very much alive.

If it has to wait until the summer, then it’s hoped it’s dealt with swiftly, thus allowing the club to then switch their attention to the transfer market and bringing in new signings.
