Villa player ratings vs Luton: Decisive duo help secure impressive win

Aston Villa secured a 3-1 win over Luton Town on Sunday, extending our run of home Premier League wins to 12.

Goals from John McGinn and Moussa Diaby put Villa in control as we dominated possession and dictated tempo for long periods, and while there was an own goal apiece for the two sides, we were able to prevail to remain in the top five in the standings.

It’s been a productive week for Villa having also seen off West Ham Utd and AZ Alkmaar over the past seven days, and with a week break now before we face Nottingham Forest, it’s hoped we can regroup, recharge and continue this impressive run of form.

Aston Villa player ratings vs Luton Town:

Emiliano Martinez, 7 – Will be disappointed that he wasn’t able to keep a clean sheet after the bizarre own goal, particularly given he didn’t really face much of a threat otherwise. Commanded his area well to take crosses and organised his back line.

Matty Cash, 8 – Solid defensive shift on the right side, using his energy and tenacity to break up attacks. Continued to push forward in more advanced areas too in order to stretch the pitch and offer an attacking outlet.

Ezri Konsa, 7.5 – Shame about his involvement in the own goal which marks him down, but that moment aside, another top effort as he kept things tight at the back and limited Luton’s threat.

Pau Torres, 8 – Another classy display as he was accurate with his distribution to help us progress the ball out from the back, and combined with Konsa well to produce a solid defensive performance.

Lucas Digne, 8 – Played a key role in two of our goals as he continues to have an important impact on our performances. Offers width and a great delivery from the left to create opportunities.

John McGinn, 8.5 – A tenacious and tireless shift from the Villa captain, as he helped us control the game. Also showed great quality for his goal, salvaging something from the free-kick routine by creating space for himself before producing a top finish.

Boubacar Kamara, 8 – Important physical presence in midfield as he continued to break things up to stop Luton from getting into a rhythm, while he was key in helping us control the tempo too.

Douglas Luiz, 8 – First assist of the season for McGinn’s goal, and in combination with Kamara, influential part of our display to keep possession ticking over and maintaining control over proceedings for most of the encounter.

Nicolò Zaniolo, 7 – Showed moments of quality and continues to look a functional fit in the side, but still lacking that decisive impact in the final third as he searches for a bigger impact. Replaced at half-time.

Moussa Diaby, 8.5 – A constant headache for the Luton defence with his movement and pace, making runs in behind and in the channels to drag their backline around. Scored his first goal at Villa Park too as he helped secure a key win.

Ollie Watkins, 7 – Didn’t have much in the way of goalscoring opportunities aside from an early chance, but continued to play an important role with his movement in the final third as well as his link-up play to help create openings and space for others to exploit.

Substitutes:

Leon Bailey, 8 – A positive impact after coming on at half-time, using his pace and movement well down the right side to add a direct threat. Much more consistent right now to continue to offer an important contribution.
