Touted target as Villa look to bolster depth in key area this summer

Aston Villa are reportedly considering Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a potential option to bolster our attacking depth ahead of the new season.

The 28-year-old is a free agent this summer after leaving Everton having seen his contract expire at the end of last season, and so he’ll be hoping to sign for a new club in the coming weeks.

Calvert-Lewin bagged 71 goals and 22 assists in 273 appearances for the Toffees while he has four goals in 11 games for England, and so although question marks can be raised over his fitness and injury history, he has certainly made a positive impression in terms of being a goalscorer in the Premier League.

According to The Telegraph, Villa are looking to strengthen our options in attack behind Ollie Watkins ahead of the new campaign, and it’s reported that we’ve sounded out Calvert-Lewin as a possible solution.

That said, it’s added that the former Everton frontman is only likely to become a priority target for Villa if we’re unable to bring in a different option towards the end of the summer transfer window, and so time will tell if our touted interest ultimately goes nowhere, or develops into something more serious next month.

Many will undoubtedly dismiss this possible move immediately, as Villa could, and should, look to be more ambitious and sign a top talent with the ability to make a long-term impact alongside Watkins in the final third.

In contrast, Calvert-Lewin, fitness permitting, would bring experience and goalscoring quality to the team at a time when we desperately need more firepower, while given his attributes and strengths, he would provide us with a different dynamic up front to what Watkins gives us, with the pair perhaps even able to play together as a duo given the possibility of complimenting each other’s game.

Ultimately, if Emery believes that he can prove to be a savvy signing and an important addition to his squad, it’s hoped that we’re able to land his signature and add much-needed depth in the attacking department.

Nevertheless, for a club looking to break back into the Champions League places and to win trophies, it has to be questioned as to whether Calvert-Lewin is really the best attainable option out there that could make an important impact for Emery, this season and beyond.
