Official: Villa agree deal to sign Diego Carlos from Sevilla

Aston Villa have officially announced that an agreement has been reached with Sevilla for the signing of defender Diego Carlos.

Villa and boss Steven Gerrard have wasted little time in strengthening the squad, having already announced the signings of Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara before the transfer window has even opened.

As per the club’s official website, it has now been confirmed that Carlos will be the next addition to the Villa squad, with a deal said to be agreed with Sevilla for the transfer of the Brazilian defender, although no official fee has been confirmed. He will arrive in England on Thursday where he will undergo his medical and finalise personal terms.

According to The Express and Star’s Matt Maher, the fee is believed to be around £26m.

The 29-year-old boasts experience in both France and Spain as well as playing regularly in the Europa League and Champions League with Sevilla in recent years, and his physical and aggressive style of play will continue to strengthen the spine of this Villa side.

While we boast plenty of attacking and creative talent, Gerrard has evidently prioritised finding a balance to solidify the team in the defensive phase, and Carlos will no doubt now arrive to displace either Tyrone Mings or Ezri Konsa in the starting line-up.

It’s another important and exciting signing from Villa, as we continue to add real quality to the squad and set out our intention and ambition.

Gerrard has identified the areas in which he felt we needed to get better in, and the club have fully backed him thus far with the expectation that there will be further arrivals in the coming weeks and months.

For now though, we have two new signings who have been secured early in the summer to give them the maximum amount of time possible to settle in and acclimatise, and Carlos will no doubt bring more steeliness and class to the side to help us reach the next level.
