Sky Sports: Villa tipped to step up Cantwell pursuit as Grealish nears exit

Aston Villa will reportedly step up their interest in Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell, should Jack Grealish complete his move to Man City as expected this week.

Villa have been busy this transfer window already having completed the signings of Emiliano Buendia, Ashley Young, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings.

However, it appears as though our recruitment drive isn’t done yet, as Sky Sports report that we are expected to step up our pursuit of Cantwell, should Grealish’s move to Man City go through.

It’s added in the report above that there has been no contact between the two clubs as of yet, but we do hold an interest in the 23-year-old and that will likely become more serious should we have a void to fill in the side in the coming days.

Cantwell has emerged as a key figure for Norwich, playing a vital role in their promotion back to the Premier League last season, as he registered six goals and eight assists in 34 appearances last year.

The left-sided midfielder would add creativity, flair and a goal threat if he were to join, as Villa look to continue to add quality in the attacking unit as we prepare for Grealish’s departure by bringing in several options to avoid being so over-reliant on one single player again.

Time will tell if a deal can be done with Norwich, as ultimately having already signed Buendia from them this summer, it would come as no surprise if they close the door on losing another pivotal player in their side so close to the start of the new campaign, or perhaps put a substantial price-tag on him which could fend Villa off.

It remains to be seen which outcome comes to fruition, but Villa could be set to test Norwich’s resolve this week as Dean Smith and the management look to replace what Grealish has provided for us over the last few years.
