What Unai Emery said as Villa contract extension confirmed

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has shared his thoughts after the club confirmed that a contract extension until 2027 has been agreed with the Spaniard.

The 52-year-old took charge of the club in October 2022, and we’ve seen an incredible transformation over the 18 months that has followed since, as we continue our pursuit of a top-four finish in the Premier League this season, as well as silverware in Europe through the Europa Conference League.

As Emery continues to lay the foundations to build something special at Villa, it was a huge boost for the club to confirm that he had extended his stay for an additional year until 2027, with the initial report from the Athletic also noting that more talks are expected in the summer to further prolong his stint in charge.

The Villa boss has been a class act since he arrived and has changed the mentality around the club both internally within the squad and with the supporters, and he reiterated his delight with the structure and set-up around him and was keen to stress the need to continue to be demanding to continue on our current trajectory.

“We are enjoying our way together with Villa fans, the club owners, management and this great group of players that we are proud of,” he told VillaTV. “Me and the football management… we share the vision of the owners. Nassef [Sawiris] and Wes [Edens] are very supportive and respectful, and we have a good environment and the right structure to develop this football club.

“We must maintain the hard-working spirit, clever decisions and coordination with the ownership that we have found during this time. We will work to get better and better. And we will demand from each other. Ambition already is, and must always be, the motto of this project.”

Our full focus will undoubtedly be on our remaining games this season to ensure that we achieve our key short-term objectives, and that in turn can help us reach the next stage of our progression on and off the pitch.

Emery’s decision to commit will also hopefully have a knock-on effect not only when it comes to his current players and their respective futures, but also in continuing to attract our priority transfer targets to further strengthen the squad.

It’s undoubtedly an exciting time to be a Villa fan, and it’s hoped that having extended for another year and potentially more, Emery has a significant period of time at the helm to continue to create many more memorable moments and leave a lasting legacy at the club.
