Aston Villa 4-0 Southampton: Match report, goals and highlights

Aston Villa secured a comprehensive 4-0 win over Southampton on Saturday with goals from Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz, Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings.

Villa took an early lead after some patient build-up play led to the ball being fed into Watkins, who turned his man brilliantly to create space for himself before producing a top-class finish.

Although Southampton enjoyed plenty of possession throughout the game, finishing with a 61% share, it was Villa who continued to create the better chances and we were rewarded for that just before half-time as Luiz tapped home Coutinho’s squared ball across the face of the goal, after a superb pass over the top from Calum Chambers.

Coutinho was guilty of missing some great opportunities in the first half which could have put us beyond reach even earlier, but the Brazilian playmaker was finally able to find the back of the net early in the second half as Villa continued to take a commanding lead.

Just minutes later it was 4-0, as after some great play from Matty Cash down the right flank, he pulled it back to find Ings in space in the box and the former Southampton striker made no mistake as he curled his effort into the opposite corner to seal what was an impressive victory.

That’s now back-to-back wins and clean sheets for Villa, and Steven Gerrard was unsurprisingly delighted with his players after producing another positive performance and securing three important points as we continue to battle our way out of a poor run of form.

Up next is Leeds Utd in midweek, and Villa will hope to produce more of the same as we continue to show discipline and organisation defensively coupled with a clinical edge in the final third.
