Move touted as Villa close in on appointing sporting director

Aston Villa are reportedly close to appointing Antonio Cordon as our new sporting director, while his previous assistants could also be joining him.

Changes at the club were expected this summer, as with Unai Emery seemingly having a strong voice in how the squad is built and improved, the expectation was that Villa would bring in new management staff who can work with him moving forward and share the same vision.

Speculation was rife a few months ago about Cordon after he left Real Betis and was linked with the post at Villa, and now it’s suggested that a deal is close and could be announced quite soon.

According to Muchodeporte, via Canal Sur Radio, Cordon is set take up a new role at Villa this summer, and his former backroom staff at Real Betis, Alberto Benito and Jose Ignacio Navarro, will also be joining him at the club.

It’s added that the deal to bring them to Villa now seems likely, and so it appears as though there will be a revolution of sort at the club at the end of the season which will no doubt give Emery more stability and familiarity having likely been involved in the process of identifying the best fit for the roles.

While we’ve seen how successful his first signing at the club has been with Alex Moreno’s growing influence and impressive displays, it’s a promising development if accurate that our recruitment team will hopefully continue to identify and bring in players who significantly improve the group and can make us more competitive.

Time will tell just how accurate the report above is both in terms of if an agreement is reached and the touted timeline, but it’s a rumour that hasn’t gone away since Emery was appointed, and ultimately it makes a lot of sense to build a team around him that suit his ideas and allows him to work in lockstep with them on their vision for Villa.

The Spanish tactician has done an excellent job so far this season to take us into the top six in the Premier League as things stand, but the summer transfer market promises to be fundamental in how he shapes the squad for the long-term as he’ll want to bring in new faces and mould it into his own.

Based on the report above, he’ll potentially soon have Cordon and his new team to lean on in making that an easier process.
