Villa ace provides update on injury comeback in hint at key boost

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno provided an update on his comeback from injury on Wednesday, as Unai Emery hopes to have him available again soon.

The 30-year-old missed our season opener last weekend as he continues his recovery from hamstring surgery, following an injury that he suffered at the end of the last campaign.

Emery suggested over the summer that we’re likely to see the Spanish full-back return at the end of this month or perhaps early September, while he has continued to offer updates on social media throughout his rehabilitation.

As seen in the image posted below initially by his partner on Instagram, Moreno has provided the latest insight into his comeback, as he’s seen on the pitches at Bodymoor Heath, hopefully stepping up his workload.

It’s an important boost though that he’s continuing to make progress and is hopefully not far off now, as we have undoubtedly missed his presence on our left side since he was sidelined.

While Lucas Digne has done a decent job of filling in, he isn’t as effective in Emery’s system and style of play as Moreno, who has quickly become a fans’ favourite given his form since he arrived from Real Betis in January.

Villa have had horrible news on the injury front over the past week with both Emiliano Buendia and Tyrone Mings suffering significant knee injuries that will rule them out of most, if not all, of this season, while we still have Moreno, Jacob Ramsey, Jhon Duran and others working their way back from their own respective setbacks.

There is no doubt that we missed Moreno and Ramsey on our left flank against Newcastle Utd at the weekend, and it’s imperative that we get that influential duo back as soon as possible to provide their energy, defensive work ethic and quality in attack to shore that side of the pitch up and make us a better outfit in both phases of the game.

Villa face Everton this Sunday and that is certainly set to come too soon for Moreno, but there is hope that given the timeline offered by Emery over pre-season, that we’ll see the Spaniard perhaps make the bench for the trip to Burnley on August 27 or for Liverpool away the following weekend.
