Injured Villa ace posts update ahead of decision on availability

Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne has provided an update on his injury as we await news on his availability for this weekend against Burnley.

The 30-year-old was forced off in the 50th minute of our 3-2 defeat to Man Utd on Boxing Day, while he also required help from the medical staff in coming off the pitch.

Unai Emery later confirmed in his post-match interview that the Frenchman sustained a hamstring injury, and so there was concern that he could be set for a spell on the sidelines as he recovers.

The Villa boss will confirm our team news for the visit of Burnley on Saturday afternoon in his pre-match press conference on Friday, but Digne has taken to social media to provide an update as he goes through his own recovery work at home.

As seen in the image below from his Instagram story, the left-back is doing all he can to recover from the setback, but it’s unclear at this stage if this indicates it isn’t as serious as first feared as he often posts this, or if he will be ruled out.

Ultimately, the expectation is that he won’t be available for selection given the nature of the potential problem, as a hamstring injury isn’t something that will be risked even if it isn’t as bad as first feared.

Digne has been a key figure for us so far this season, making 26 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing five assists.

However, with the return of Alex Moreno from his own injury issue, the Spaniard is expected to step in if he is unavailable for selection, and that could be an important opportunity for him to reestablish himself in the Villa XI.

Regardless, it would still be a blow if we lose that competition and depth for any period of time, and so it’s hoped that Emery delivers some positive news on Friday, so that we’re in a good place injury wise to bounce back from a disappointing week after defeat at Old Trafford and a frustrating draw at home against Sheffield Utd.
