Villa duo secure international call-ups ahead of upcoming tournament

Aston Villa duo Jacob Ramsey and Cameron Archer have officially been included in the final England U21 squad for the upcoming UEFA European U21 Championships.

It’s great news for the pair as they continue to gain valuable experience and develop their respective games after being named in the provisional squad initially, with Ramsey coming off the back of an impressive campaign, particularly under Unai Emery.

The 22-year-old ended last season with six goals and eight assists in 38 appearances, and he’ll now look forward to adding to his nine caps for the U21s to date by playing a key role this summer as his career continues to go from strength to strength.

As for Archer, the 21-year-old striker scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 20 Championship appearances for Middlesbrough last season during his loan spell on Teesside, and this tournament will be an important one for him.

While it could be argued that he has already done enough to warrant being given a chance by Emery in the new season to showcase his quality in a Villa shirt and compete with Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran, he’ll know a strong showing this summer will only reinforce that argument further.

With that in mind, it’s hoped that he finds some form through the group stage and continues to play a pivotal role for the England U21s as they look to go all the way.

They begin the tournament against the Czech Republic on Thursday, June 22 (ko 5pm), before facing Israel on Sunday, June 25 (ko 5pm) before completing the group stage against Germany on Wednesday, June 28 (ko 5pm).

Both Ramsey and Archer will hope to firstly feature heavily in those games to cement their respective places in the starting line-up with England’s first objective being to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
