Aston Villa team news: Positive update but quartet still sidelined

Aston Villa face Man Utd at Old Trafford on Sunday and the club has delivered our latest team news ahead of the encounter.

Villa secured another important win in midweek over Fulham, but as we continue to pursue a return to Europe next season, Unai Emery and the players know we’ll likely have to continue our winning run through to the end of the campaign.

In order to have the best possible chance of doing that, the Villa boss would have been hoping to confirm some important injury boosts for this weekend, but it’s very much as we were with Matty Cash, Boubacar Kamara, Leon Bailey and Philippe Coutinho still all sidelined.

As per the club’s tweet below, they were keen to stress that the quartet are making progress, with Cash and Bailey seemingly closer to returning to action while both Kamara and Coutinho are recovering well too, but ultimately we need depth, competition and different tactical solutions that Emery can use to win our remaining games.

Those available to the Spaniard have done a superb job of putting us in this position, but it’s hoped that we can get key individuals back sooner rather than later with just five games remaining in the Premier League season.

With no update provided on Jacob Ramsey – who appeared to awkwardly roll his ankle in the win over Fulham and was replaced in the latter stages – that would suggest that he hasn’t suffered a setback and will be at Emery’s disposal on Sunday, which in itself is a major boost.

Time will tell if the Villa boss has any fresh concerns beyond those mentioned above, but he’ll surely be tempted to name an unchanged XI again this weekend, as he hopes that consistency and balance in the team will continue to be a big influence in our efforts to get another positive result and move closer towards European qualification.
