Villa paired with interest in Spanish defensive talent

Aston Villa are reportedly in talks with Levante over the possibility of signing right-back Marc Pubill this summer, with an offer potentially forthcoming.

The 20-year-old initially joined the Spanish outfit at youth level in 2020, but after earning promotion to the senior squad, he has since gone on to make 42 appearances, scoring two goals and providing two assists to go with his defensive work.

Currently under contract until June 2026, it remains to be seen if Villa can prise the Spain U19s international away, but according to COPE Valencia, we’re in talks over a potential transfer, and a formal offer is expected to be made.

Considered one of Levante’s best assets despite his young age, Pubill recently changed the agency who represent him, and so time will tell if that was a decision with a view of getting a move elsewhere this summer.

COPE also report that Sevilla are keen on the Spanish youngster who is said to be valued at around €6m, and so time will tell if we’re able to fend off the competition if we do indeed step up our reported interest.

It is felt as though we do need to add something at right-back following the exit of Ashley Young, with competition and depth needed to challenge Matty Cash for a starting berth.

Ezri Konsa can shift across to play that position while we also have Calum Chambers who is perhaps capable of filling in if needed, but ultimately a natural in that role would be the ideal scenario, and better yet if it is a young talent with a lot of potential and room for growth.

With the influence of Unai Emery and President of Football Operations Monchi, interest in players in Spain was always likely this summer, and they will no doubt have a strong idea and understanding of the Spanish market and an eye for talent.

In turn, time will tell if they believe that Pubill could be an important acquisition to strengthen our defensive options, as we continue to improve the squad ahead of what promises to be a gruelling campaign given our desire to compete for trophies across multiple competitions.

    1. I guess there’s Bogarde [not on the tour], who looked decent in that role vs Walsall off the bench. Did think Kaine Kesler Hayden might get a chance this season to offer depth but on loan at Plymouth for the season now.
