Villa midfielder closing in on permanent exit after loan stint

Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba is reportedly closing in on securing a permanent move to Luton Town this summer.

The 29-year-old joined us from Club Brugge in August 2019, and has since gone on to make 68 appearances for the club.

However, having found opportunities hard to come by, particularly following Unai Emery’s arrival last year, Nakamba joined Luton on loan in January and went on to play a key role in their promotion to the Premier League.

The Zimbabwe international will see his contract with us expire next summer, but it’s now reported that he could seal a permanent move to Luton in the coming days or weeks as a deal is said to be close.

According to Zimbabwean outlet H-Metro, a reliable figure in Nakamba’s entourage has informed them that he is close to sealing a move back to Luton, his desired choice, with their boss Rob Edwards is said to be keen on bringing him back. It’s added from the source that the deal is ‘99.9 percent’ done, and so time will tell if the announcement is made imminently.

Given the quality that we’ve now got in midfield with Emery leaning heavily on John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Boubacar Kamara and Jacob Ramsey, coupled with the competition and depth that Leander Dendoncker and new signing Youri Tielemans will provide, Nakamba’s role is unlikely to change at Villa if he were to return for next season.

In turn, it’s best for all parties concerned that he finds an alternative solution elsewhere, and Luton would likely be the ideal option for him given the success that they enjoyed together last season.

From a Villa perspective it would clear space in the squad, potentially bring in a decent fee and give Emery more room to manoeuvre in terms of stamping his mark on the group and perhaps bringing in another of his signings to give him what he feels he’ll need to build on our progress from last year.
