Villa paired with interest in attacking reinforcement for Emery

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Feyenoord forward Santiago Gimenez as we consider bolstering our attacking options this summer.

Unai Emery has seen Ollie Watkins relish the opportunity to lead the line for us following the decision to sell Danny Ings in January, while Villa do have Jhon Duran continuing to develop and push for more involvement.

We’ll also face a decision on the future of Cameron Archer this summer when he returns from a successful loan spell with Middlesbrough, but there is of course the possibility that we look to bring in a new striker that Emery potentially identifies as a key signing himself.

According to The Mirror, Gimenez is said to be on our transfer radar, with the 22-year-old scoring 20 goals and providing three assists in 41 appearances for Feyenoord so far this season, playing a key role in their likely Eredivisie title success.

With two goals in 10 caps for Mexico too, it appears as though Gimenez has a big future ahead of him both at club and international level, but time will tell if that next step in his career involves Villa, as the report does add that he’s attracting interest from Spain too.

It’s a crucial summer transfer window for us this year, as not only will Emery want to stamp his mark on the squad, but it’s imperative that he gets the balance right in terms of improving us with quality additions without disrupting the development of the current group, which has excelled under him thus far, and ultimately complimenting them to take us further.

With our push for European qualification this season, we’ve shown we’re capable of competing at a certain level now, but it’s about strengthening where necessary to help us kick on, and if Gimenez is identified as a player who can do that, then we’ll see if a deal can be done.

Further, Emery will not only want to enjoy deep domestic Cup runs next season to try and win silverware, but we also hope to secure a place in Europe for next year too. With that comes the need for competition and depth, and so it’s likely to be a busy summer if we can finish this campaign well.
