Aston Villa have confirmed that Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United in a permanent transfer, in a deal believed to be worth £35m.
The 29-year-old arrived on a free transfer in 2023, and he went on to make 134 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and providing 25 assists in those outings.
His influence went far beyond those numbers though, as he was instrumental in our success under Unai Emery thus far, playing a pivotal role in midfield to dictate and control proceedings for us.

In turn, it’s a major blow to lose him, as Villa have confirmed that he has left on a permanent transfer in their club statement, and so now the focus switches to filling that void with a successor who is capable of proving to be an efficient replacement.
It certainly won’t be easy given just how good Tielemans was in that role for us, and Emery will undoubtedly miss his presence in the dressing room and on the pitch given his technical ability, intelligence and leadership.
However, players ultimately come and go, and just as he did in identifying Tielemans as an ideal replacement for Douglas Luiz three years ago, it’s hoped that the Villa boss is just as successful in bringing in a new face this time round to partner Boubacar Kamara in our deeper pivot.
As per The Telegraph, Man Utd triggered a release clause in the Belgian international’s contract which sees him move in a £35m deal, and while on one hand it could be argued that it’s a decent fee for a 29-year-old who arrived on a free and struggled with injuries at times during his stint with us, it’s almost creating a favourable narrative to soften the blow of losing him as it’s a low figure for a player of his quality.
Nevertheless, he showcased his class over the last two years in particular after a slow start at Villa, and ultimately it was a joy to watch him play and he was fundamental in bringing Champions League football to the club as well as a trophy in the form of the Europa League last season.
We wish him well in his future, but it’s now critical that Villa make a smart signing to fill that particular void in the side.
