Konsa on signing new Villa contract, ambitions for future

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa is delighted to have signed a new long-term contract at the club, and has outlined his ambitions moving forward.

The 25-year-old has been an influential figure in the heart of our backline since he arrived from Brentford in 2019, and he has since gone on to make 145 appearances for the club.

Having continued to improve and develop his game under Unai Emery, he will undoubtedly be a pillar of the side in the next part of our journey, and so it was brilliant news to hear this week that he had committed his long-term future to Villa.

Unsurprisingly, the man himself was delighted to put pen to paper on a reported five-year deal, as per the Athletic, as he reiterated the positive atmosphere at the club under Emery as he feels as though he’s certainly come a long way under the Spanish tactician already.

“I’m really delighted,” he told VillaTV. “It’s been a good journey so far and I’m just delighted to be able to continue my journey here. I’m really enjoying my football at the moment, I feel like I’m really thriving under the boss and the project is really good.

“I’m just really, really excited to see what the future holds.

“Everyone here, us boys, the staff, are all close, we’re all together. We enjoy each other’s company and we all look forward to training every single day and learning new things.”

Villa begin our Europa Conference League campaign on Thursday evening at Legia Warsaw, and continuing to compete in European competitions as well as for trophies is evidently a target for all concerned moving forward.

Given Emery’s experience and pedigree in Europe, it’s hoped that he can lead us on a successful run this year, but importantly we’ve shown under his management over the past 11 months or so that we’re building for sustained success by developing a way of playing and adding reinforcements who fit that model.

Konsa will continue to be fundamental in that process, and he has insisted that the club want to be involved in Europe every year and are eager to end our long wait for silverware.

“Obviously, to continue in Europe,” he added. “We’re there this season and we want to do it again next season, and the season after that.

“And I think the main aim for this club and the manager, like he always says, is to win a trophy.”

With his defensive qualities, technical ability in possession and versatility to play in different roles at the back, there is no doubt that Konsa will be integral to our plans this season and beyond, and it’s hoped that we can achieve our objectives in the coming years.
