What McGinn said after signing new Villa contract, Emery praise

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has shared his delight after it was confirmed that he has signed a new contract with the club.

As per Villa’s statement, the 28-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal that keeps him with us until 2027, and so he joins a number of key players in securing their long-term futures at the club as we continue to work towards keeping our core group in place.

McGinn joined us in August 2018 and has made 183 appearances for the club to date, scoring 17 goals and providing 26 assists while becoming a pivotal figure in our midfield given his tenacity, energy, versatility and desire on and off the ball.

Having enjoyed a return to form and resurgence under Unai Emery, the Villa captain will now be relishing the chance to build on our progress from last season and continuing to lead us towards our ultimate objective of being successful.

Naturally, McGinn was delighted with the new contract and he’s looking forward to what should hopefully be an exciting time for the club moving forward as we target trophies and a strong European run under Emery.

“I’m delighted to get it sorted, this is home for me now,” he told VillaTV. “I’m really excited to be a part of what should be a really exciting journey.

“If you’d have told me eight years ago that I would be a Premier League player and playing every week I would have laughed at you. The progression and the journey has been mental. It hasn’t properly sunk in. I’m loving every single minute.

“If you’d have told me when I was young I’d be playing in the Premier League against the best players in the world for a club like Aston Villa – I have to pinch myself. I don’t take it for granted and try to be the best I can be every day.”

McGinn went on to share his confidence and belief in our ability to kick on now, as having been at the club from when we got promotion back to the Premier League and having steadily pushed our way back up into the top half of the standings, the future promises more progression.

The Scottish international is enjoying working under Emery who has undoubtedly had a positive influence and impact on his form, and McGinn will hope to continue to be a leading figure in his plans moving forward as we try to raise the level again next season.

Trophies are evidently a target for all concerned, and rightly so, and hopefully we’ll continue to be increasingly competitive in the coming years to ensure it’s a consistent opportunity year in and year out, while also making strides forward in the Premier League to try and improve on our seventh-place finish last season.

“If we perform like we did in the second half of the season, there’s no reason why we can’t compete for trophies,” he added. That’s what the club needs to aim for. We need to get success back – European football is part of that but the club needs trophies. The fans crave it.

“There have been plenty of ups and downs, but I’ve loved every minute of it, and we’ve been pretty successful.

“The first season couldn’t have gone any better and we managed to get promoted. We found the Premier League challenging.

“We’ve had some great moments. This season epitomised what everyone wants to achieve and showed the potential and ambition everyone has. We’re really starting to achieve that with the manager and staff in place. It’s exciting for the fans and exciting to be a player here.”
