What Monchi said after Villa confirm crucial appointment

Aston Villa’s new President of Football Operations, Monchi, has revealed his delight at joining the club and is relishing the new role he will start in July.

Villa confirmed the 54-year-old’s arrival from Sevilla on Friday, as he will form part of our management restructuring this summer which will now see him play a fundamental role on the sporting side for the club’s owners.

With his previous experience at Sevilla, the Spaniard has a big reputation having played an influential role in their success in recent years, and although he had a difficult stint at Roma in between his two stints in Spain, he will now start a new challenge with different parameters and a highly ambitious plan moving forward.

Further, it’s an opportunity for him to reunite with Unai Emery after their previous spell together in Seville, and together, it’s hoped that they form quite the dream team in terms of making Villa as competitive as possible on the pitch.

“I am very excited to join Aston Villa, a great project which is striving for excellence from the Under-9s to the top level, and I completely share the vision of Mr. Sawiris and Mr. Edens,” Monchi said, as per the club’s statement.

“I am also delighted and can’t wait to work with Unai Emery again, one of the best managers in football. After enjoying so many years with Sevilla FC and winning several European trophies with my life-long club, I look forward to building on the recent successes at Aston Villa and ensuring this colossal club continues to grow and improve.”

That last comment will undoubtedly add to the excitement for Villa fans, as there is a real feeling now that we have a manager and director at the top who can guide us to real success in the coming years.

Naturally, they still have to deliver results, but given their respective track records, it certainly puts us in a strong position moving forward to attract a higher level of targets, and to hopefully assemble a squad that can compete at the top level in time by building on our progress and improvement last season under Emery.

While Monchi won’t start in his new position until July, it remains to be seen if our recruitment continues in the coming weeks or if we wait for him to arrive to oversee the process.

Having already agreed a deal to sign Youri Tielemans on July 1, it’s hoped we can move swiftly for other preferred targets in order to avoid the risk of missing out, but it promises to be a big three years ahead now with Monchi and Emery at the helm on the football side of things, as we strive for sustained success.
