Official: Villa confirm loan signing of Robin Olsen

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Robin Olsen on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Villa were left short in the goalkeeper ranks after Tom Heaton’s exit last summer, with Jed Steer the only other proven, senior shot-stopper in the first-team squad to offer competition and back-up to Emiliano Martinez.

With that in mind, Steven Gerrard and the club have opted to act on that and bring in another option to keep pushing the Argentine No.1 in training, with Olsen arriving on loan to do exactly that.

As per the club’s official site, the Swedish international has joined us for the remainder of this campaign from Roma, with his loan stint at Sheffield United being cut short in order for the switch to happen.

Olsen boasts experience and pedigree at a high level for both club and country, and so he will undoubtedly bring a lot to training, while also no doubt having personal ambitions of breaking into the Villa starting XI at some stage if given an opportunity.

Ultimately though, and it’s strange to see it this way, but Villa fans will likely be hoping that we don’t necessarily have to see him this season, as that in turn would mean that Martinez is fit and available throughout the rest of the campaign. Given how important and consistent he has been for us, that will be a big boost in our bid to continue to climb the Premier League table.

Nevertheless, Olsen, 32, will be hoping that he does enough to warrant a more permanent move in the summer, provided that he is happy with playing a back-up role in the coming months and perhaps further in the future too.
