Villa ace makes PL team of the week after decisive impact

Aston Villa defender Pau Torres has been named in the Premier League team of the week after his impressive display against Tottenham.

Not only was the Spanish international key in terms of his defensive work, he was a threat in the opposition box too and scored a pivotal equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

That in turn helped us to secure all three points in a 2-1 win in north London, which subsequently moved us into the top four in the Premier League standings.

The 26-year-old has been excellent so far this season for the most part, having slotted into our backline following the injury of Tyrone Mings and impressed.

In addition to what he brings defensively, his composure, distribution and influence in our build-up play has been crucial, particularly given the way that Unai Emery wants us to play with control and possession.

Having gone close to finding the back of the net earlier in the first half, Torres made no mistake with his header from Douglas Luiz’s brilliant delivery for our equaliser, and it’s certainly a significant boost if he can become a consistent goal threat on set-pieces too.

His performance this past weekend was deserving of a spot in the Premier League team of the week though, as seen in the tweet below, and he’ll hope to continue to play a leading role in our push to compete at the top of the table moving forward.

Others were arguably unfortunate not to make the cut with him, with Emiliano Martinez proving to be decisive with some world-class saves, while both John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara were excellent in midfield, as was Youri Tielemans after coming on at half-time.

Nevertheless, it’s only one Villa representative this week, and given it’s become a regular occurrence this year, we’ll hopefully see a few more after our game against Bournemouth on Sunday.
