What Emery said on Mings after new Villa contract announced

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has given his thoughts on Tyrone Mings signing a new contract this week to extend his stay at the club.

As confirmed in a club statement on Friday, Mings has put pen to paper on a new deal as he continues to play a fundamental role in the Villa defence.

The 29-year-old had been an ever-present under Emery since he arrived last October prior to an injury ruling him out against Man City last weekend, and so it’s clear that he has a pivotal part to play under the Spaniard moving forward.

Speaking to reporters at his pre-Arsenal press conference, Emery shared his delight over the news and offered his thoughts on Mings both as a player and as an individual in the team.

“He is in the best moment of his career: he’s mature, he has good experiences and he wants to extend his career, physically,” he told the media on Friday, as per the club’s site.

“We are trying to improve as a team, collectively and individually, and with him we are trying to support him and give him the confidence to play.

“I think he can progress with us, and he can progress individually as well because he’s very integrated in the club. The supporters love him.”

Mings shared a wonderful message of his own on Twitter shortly after the news was confirmed, as seen below, and it’s hoped that he can continue to play an influential role in our bid for success in the coming years.

It has been heavily pointed out on the site this week how Villa struggle in his absence, and so while we look forward to welcoming Diego Carlos back from injury and perhaps new signings will arrive this summer to provide further competition, there is no denying that Mings is both a big player and personality for us.

Having now secured his long-term future at the club, it’s hoped that Emery can continue to get more from him and develop his game further, and that in turn will hopefully be key in us competing at a higher level and attempting to win trophies moving forward.
