Villa injury news: Promising update as influential ace closes in on return

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno has provided an update on his injury recovery, and it’s good news as he closes in on a return to action.

The 30-year-old has yet to feature this season after he sustained a hamstring injury in the penultimate game of the last campaign. Having suffered a setback in his recovery last month, the wait has gone on for his comeback.

While Villa boss Unai Emery has provided a timeline for his return and has suggested that he could be back in the matchday squad after the upcoming international break, Moreno himself has offered some insight into where he’s at in his recovery.

As seen in the image below from his Instagram story, the Spaniard was busy going through drills at Bodymoor Heath on Monday, and captioned his video with: “Last steps. Run, run.”

There is naturally going to be some caution around this as he was in a similar position last month before he suffered a setback and was sidelined for an extended period.

Nevertheless, it’s hoped that he comes through unscathed now and is ready to return next month, as he will provide an important boost for Emery in adding competition and depth at left-back.

Lucas Digne has done an excellent job in his place and in addition to his positive form, he has been reliable which was crucial given the lack of alternative options in that role, and so the Frenchman will fight to keep his place in the side.

With three assists in 19 appearances last season after his January arrival from Real Betis though, coupled with his influence and suitability to Emery’s system and style of play, Moreno will be stiff competition and will be itching to gradually build his match fitness and sharpness when he is back in the squad.

There will be an argument in favour of the Spanish defender being the first-choice again when he is back to his best, but with Villa pushing to climb the Premier League table as well as looking to advance in the Europa Conference League, both players will no doubt get plenty of playing time as Emery will rotate and rest when necessary.
