Details of resolution as Villa on verge of appointing Monchi

Details of the agreement that Sevilla and Monchi have reached to pave the way for his move to Aston Villa have been reported in Spain.

Villa have been strongly linked with a move for the 54-year-old over the past week, with the Guardian noting on Monday that personal terms had been agreed, but negotiations between the two clubs were ongoing.

Reports suggested that Villa officials had travelled to Spain to continue those discussions to try and reach a resolution, with key contractual issues holding up a potential deal.

However, as per Sport, it’s now reported that Sevilla and Monchi have reached an agreement to end his contract early to allow him to join Villa, and the expectation is that everything will become official in the coming hours.

It’s added that Villa will pay €2.5m of his release clause, while Monchi himself will pay €600,000, as he has ultimately pushed to start work immediately with us and so has failed to comply with the notice period in his contract with Sevilla.

While the situation has dragged on and become public and quite messy, it does sound as though a resolution has now been found, one that allows Monchi to join Villa and leaves Sevilla content with their compensation as they look for a replacement sporting director.

After Mateu Alemany ultimately opted to remain at Barcelona last month despite discussions taking place over a move to join us, Villa have continued to pursue the appointment of a sporting/technical director this summer as part of the restructuring of the management set-up at the club, and Monchi has emerged as our top target.

Unai Emery knows him well after their previous stint working together at Sevilla, and so it’s hoped that he will have that support again imminently, as we look to strengthen the squad this summer and build on what was an excellent campaign under the Spaniard last season after his arrival in November.
