Aston Villa have reportedly reached an agreement with Chelsea over the transfer of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in a deal worth £7.5m.
The 33-year-old has been a fundamental presence in our team since arriving in 2020, going on to make 256 appearances for the club and playing a key role in our progression and success since.
However, after significant speculation over his future at Villa last summer, it appears as though his time with us is coming to an end a year on, as Unai Emery’s rebuild of the squad continues.

According to Matt Law, Villa have agreed a £7.5m deal with Chelsea for Martinez in a permanent transfer, and so it looks as though his departure will materialise in the coming days.
After the events of last summer, Villa opted to avoid a repeat of that scenario this time round as we completed the signing of Zion Suzuki from Parma earlier this month to be Martinez’s successor.
In turn, that made it clear that we were ready to move on, and so the wait has been to determine whether or not the Argentine shot-stopper would be able to seal a move elsewhere.
There is no doubt that Martinez has been critical for us over the last six years, as aside from his goalkeeping qualities, his leadership, experience and winning mentality have all been vital within the group to help us get to the position that we find ourselves in now off the back of another Champions League qualification and Europa League triumph.
However, with injury issues cropping up last season coupled with the ongoing talk around his future and a reported desire to leave, Villa sensibly identified and acquired his replacement, and while it has been a memorable journey, we can now look forward to a new chapter with Suzuki hopefully providing us with a top-class solution between the posts for many years ahead.
