Aston Villa have confirmed that Louie Barry has completed a permanent transfer to Sheffield Wednesday.
The 23-year-old joined us in 2020 and impressed at youth level as he played a key role in our success during that period.
However, having been limited to just one appearance for the senior side, he has had a string of loan spells elsewhere in recent years as he continued his development with a view of trying to make a breakthrough under Unai Emery.

While that hasn’t materialised, the sensible decision for all concerned has now been reached, as Villa have officially confirmed that Barry has joined Sheff Weds in a permanent deal, ending his stint with us.
Although there is little doubt that he is a talented player with a bright future ahead of him, he wasn’t going to get the kind of role at Villa needed to help him take that next step in his career.
With his new challenge, he’ll hope to have a prominent role and play regularly in order to showcase his quality and keep improving, and so it’s the right move for him, Villa and Sheff Weds as they’ll be getting an attacking reinforcement capable of making an important impact.
For Villa, it’s hopefully a key sale that makes some level of difference when it comes to trying to balance our books and avoid any future breaches of the financial regulations, albeit the expectation is that we haven’t received a significant fee for Barry and so further sales will be needed after Sil Swinkels also made the same move earlier this week.
Nevertheless, it’s hoped that it was for a decent fee, but perhaps more pertinently, Matt Maher has since reported that Barry was earning £35,000-a-week at Villa which in itself is a major boost to cut that from our wage bill moving forward to help comply with both domestic and European rules.
That is quite the salary for a player who ultimately never came close to featuring for the first-team squad, and so hopefully that’s the start of a fresh clear out or new approach at the club to manage that better and ensure wages don’t rise that high for players at that level, as the wage bill remains a major issue for Villa.
