Permanent exit touted for Villa midfielder after positive loan stint

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson is reportedly a target for Strasbourg this summer, as they look to sign him on a permanent basis.

The 28-year-old joined us from Marseille in January 2021, but through a combination of injury problems and competition for places, he has been limited to just 23 appearances for the club.

While he did show signs of potentially staking a claim for a bigger role following Unai Emery’s arrival last year, the decision was made to loan him out in January as he moved to Strasbourg and helped them fend off the threat of relegation from Ligue 1.

Sanson scored one goal and provided two assists in 18 appearances for the French outfit, but as he prepares to return to Villa this summer, it remains to be seen what happens with his long-term future.

As per the Athletic, Emery is open to allowing Sanson, Marvelous Nakamba and Leander Dendoncker to leave this summer as he eyes further midfield reinforcements in addition to Youri Tielemans, and it’s now suggested that there could be a solution for the Frenchman.

According to L’Equipe, Strasbourg will benefit from the arrival of new ownership by getting a healthy budget for the summer transfer window, and one of their objectives is to keep Sanson after his successful loan stint in the second half of last season and make his move permanent.

While there is still an argument to suggest that Sanson has the attributes and characteristics that could allow him to play in Emery’s side and fit his style of play, he ultimately faces an uphill battle to get minutes given our midfield options, and with the arrival of Tielemans pushing him further down the pecking order, it’s likely to become more difficult for him.

In turn, the best outcome for all concerned would perhaps be reaching an agreement to see him return to Strasbourg permanently given his successful stint there last season, and so time will tell if the two clubs can work out a deal that allows for that to materialise.
